Hey,
this week felt like another reminder that digital marketing is getting harder to read from one dashboard.
Search traffic can drop even when rankings look stable. AI answers can use your content without sending the click. Reddit keeps becoming part of the research layer. And Google is slowly turning AI search into an ad product.
So this issue is mostly about one thing: visibility is no longer just about showing up. It is about where you show up, how much control you still have, and whether the click still comes back to you.
Google’s AI Search Ads Start Taking Shape
Google is testing more AI-powered ad formats inside Search and AI Mode, including conversational ad experiences and shopping-style placements.
For marketers, the shift is clear: paid search is moving closer to the answer itself. Ads will not only sit beside search results. They may appear inside the research journey, where users are still comparing options and forming intent.
Why it matters: landing pages, feeds, brand clarity and first-party data become more important when the ad experience is less like a blue-link click and more like a guided recommendation.

Google’s May Core Update Leaves SEOs Sorting Through the Damage
Google’s May core update finished rolling out in early June, and by the week of June 18 many site owners finally had enough data to start comparing affected pages and query groups.
The important part is not just whether traffic went up or down. The useful work is separating brand from non-brand, checking which directories dropped, and seeing whether impressions disappeared or rankings simply moved.
Why it matters: a traffic drop can be content, indexing, links, technical issues, lost demand or several things at once. Jumping straight to “rewrite everything” is usually too blunt.

AI Overviews Still Do Not Behave Like Normal Search Results
New research on Google AI Overviews suggests that AI search does not simply copy the classic organic results page.
Some cited sources do not rank on page one, and some answers include claims that are not fully supported by the cited pages. That makes AI visibility harder to measure than normal SEO rankings.
Why it matters: ranking well still helps, but it is not the whole game. Brands may need authority across content, third-party mentions, forums, videos and product pages if AI systems are pulling from a wider source layer.
Reddit Keeps Becoming the Human Check After AI
Another study looked at how Google AI Overviews affect Reddit engagement and found that experience-based discussions can benefit when they are surfaced through AI search.
That makes sense. AI gives the clean answer. Reddit gives the messy version: what broke, what people regret buying, what users actually recommend, and what the landing page leaves out.
Why it matters: Reddit is becoming less of a random social platform and more of a trust layer around search, product research and AI-generated recommendations.
News Discovery Keeps Moving Away From Publishers
The latest Reuters Institute Digital News Report shows how much news consumption is shifting toward social and video platforms, especially among younger audiences.
For publishers and B2B brands, that makes the old “publish on the site and distribute later” model weaker. Discovery increasingly happens in feeds, clips, communities and recommendation surfaces before someone ever visits the original site.
Why it matters: owned media still matters, but the habit is often built elsewhere first. The job is to use social and video for discovery, then pull the right readers toward newsletters, communities, tools or the main site.

My Take
The common thread this week is that marketing channels are becoming less separate.
Google Search is becoming more like a conversation. Reddit is becoming part of search validation. YouTube and social are becoming news surfaces. AI Overviews are turning source selection into a different game.
That means growth teams need to stop thinking only in channels.
The better question is: where does the customer form trust before they click?
That is where the next advantage probably sits.
